Diabetes – Ayurvedic Name: Madhumeha
Characteristic Features –
Increased frequency of urination with large amount and low specific gravity of the urine, excessive thirst and general body weakness.
There may be signs of diabetic degeneration, delayed or non-healing of wounds and muscle wasting.
Ayurvedic View –
20 types of ‘Prameha’ have been specified in Ayurvedic texts:
Born out of vitiation of Vatta or air body humor. There are 4 varieties of the same and are considered incurable.
Born out of vitiation of Pitta or fire body humor. There are 6 varieties of the same and are difficult to cure.
Born out of vitiation of Kapha or phlegm body humor. There are 10 varieties of the same and are considered to be curable.
Management by Common Cures –
• Seeds of bitter gourd are to be pounded and the powder to be taken twice with warm water.
• Juice extracted by grinding fresh bitter gourd is an excellent cure. It would work better when taken on an empty stomach.
• Tender leaves of Neem and Bilva are to be taken first time in the morning on an empty stomach.
• Bilva is recommended for diabetes patients. It has the property of declining the blood sugar levels and abates excessive urination. It could be more beneficial to take the juice extracted from the leaves on an empty stomach.
Osteo-Arthritis –
Other Names – Osteoarthrosis, Degenerative Joint disease, Arthrosis
Ayurvedic View: Sandhigata vaata
Characteristic Features:
Tenderness and enlargement of the joint with limitation of its movements.
There is pain in the affected joints, which increases on movement and decreases with rest.
Articular stiffness and wasting of the muscles.
Coarse crepitus.
The pain might increase with change in the weather.
Ayurvedic View:
Management by Common Cures –
• Ginger is used as a hot fomentation in the disorder of Arthritis and other forms of joint and muscle pains. For this purpose, a powder of dry ginger is mixed into oil of sesame seeds and massaged into the joint.
• Being slimy and hot, groundnuts cause a decrease in the ‘vatta’ or the air body humor. It is thus useful for those suffering from joint pains. A local massage of groundnut oil, previously warmed, proves helpful.
• Oil massage of the herb provides strength and warmth to the body. It acts as a pain reliever in ailments like joint pains, acts as a rubefacient that relieves muscular pain and stiffness.
Wound –
Ayurvedic Name: Vrana
Characteristic Features:
– Pain and bleeding due to cut or opening in the skin.
– Perhaps presence of exposed tissues.
Ayurvedic View –
Vrana is considered in Ayurveda as a conjuncture that tears off the body. As per the predominance of the doshas, the wounds have been categorized as Vattaja, Pittaja, Kaphaja and Raktaja Vrana.
Management by Home Cures –
• Local application of alum powder at the site of the injury arrests blood loss and gives antiseptic cover as well.
• In case of an injury or wound, you could sprinkle some powder of camphor on the site so as to combat inflammation, blood loss and pain and also prevent degeneration of the wound.
• Approx. 50 ml of the juice extracted by crushing the fruit of Amla is to be taken 2 or 3 times in a day.
• Smoke from the leaves of Margosa tree can be applied onto an open wound, which acts as a natural antiseptic and insecticide.
