The positive and healing effect of Mantras can be felt personally, through studies or by feeling the doshas during Ayurvedic pulse diagnosis. According to the ancient science of Ayurveda, every living being has specific energies that influence vitality and form the basis for his/her physical functioning. Formed primarily from the five elements (space, air, fire, water and earth), these energies are referred to as doshas. The three different kinds of doshas present in our body include:
- Vata dosha (Space and air)
- Pitta dosha (Fire)
- Kapha dosha (earth and water)
What Ayurveda Conveys
These doshas are responsible for all the functions of the mind and body. According to Ayurveda, our mind and body is in a constant state of change, and in order to create a strong and balanced state of being, it is important for us to keep these doshas from aggravating, because any kind of disturbances or imbalance in these doshas can result into diseases.
Although Ayurveda suggests various tools to harmonize our inner energy, based on individual diet and lifestyle guidance, including Panchakarma Ayurvedic detox, using various herbs and spices and practicing yoga, pranayama and meditation. Yet, there is another way as well to bring these doshas into perfect balance and harmony – the yoga of sound. It is said that the chanting of specific mantras or hymns, affect us on the cellular level and offer immense physiological healing results. Mantras are nothing but sacred sounds that are known to affect our vibratory being and consciousness and these play a vital role in the overall healing process.
Healing Mantras For Vata Dosha
Vata dosha happens to be the most prominent dosha, and is responsible for all the communication between the mind and the body. It is believed that 80 percent of diseases are caused when this particular dosha goes out of balance. An individual whose vata dosha gets imbalanced ends up thinking, moving and talking so fast, as to the point of exhaustion.
Since Vata dosha or the air body humor is primarily erratic, cold, active and sensitive, sounds that are warming, calming, soothing and gently rhythmic are beneficial for balancing this particular dosha. Some soothing mantras for healing an imbalance in the vata dosha include sham and shrim. Hrim is a protective mantra that is also regarded to be virtuous for people who are vata type. When the vata seems to be falling out of balance, these mantras may be repeated throughout the day, and especially during meditation.
Healing Mantras For Pitta Dosha
Pitta dosha, on the other hand, takes care of our metabolism and visual senses. Any disturbance in this dosha and makes the individual to become too hot, moist, sharp, fast, intense, inflamed and even irritated at times. Hot-headedness is also a major symptom of an imbalance in this dosha.
The hot, intense and sharp qualities of pitta dosha can be harmonized by anything that has a cooling and a soothing effect on the mind. Some cooling and compassionate sounds, such as som, sham, shum, sheem and aim (pronounced as I’m) are best to be chanted by a pitta type person. By repeating these mantras silently as and when there is need, in a slow and relaxed manner, the dosha imbalance can be restored.
Healing Mantras For Kapha Dosha
The kapha dosha or the phlegm body humor is assigned to manage and maintain permanence in our body and offer stability. There are only few problems that can arises due to an imbalance in the kapha dosha, but these are the most difficult to treat. A kapha type individual, who is rather cool, yet sluggish and dull, could use some warming, yet fast and uplifting sounds in order to harmonize his/her state of being.
The mantras that help in restoring kapha dosha imbalance include aim, hum and hrim. For the initial few minutes, these may be chanted out loud, and thereafter, we can repeat them with the breath.
