Choosing the right diet and maintaining a strong digestion is essentially the most needed fuel both for gaining as well as maintaining health and wellbeing.

  • Have your heaviest meal of the day during lunch. This is because our digestive fire is the strongest during mid-day, when our bodies are most active.

  • Having a glass of butter-milk or lassi during or after lunch is good, and makes the meal all the more delightful. Besides, the lactobacilli present in the lassi also helps to reduce gas and bloating.

  • Ayurveda strongly recommends mindful eating. Thus, while you are eating, keep yourself completely disconnected. Do not use any phone, watch TV or read a newspaper or something, since one often ends up eating more when distracted. These distractions also engage our nervous system, thus hampering the process of physical digestion.

  • Do NOT overeat. As someone has rightly said, “only one-third of what we eat is really good for our own health. The rest is good for our doctor’s health”. During every meal, our stomach should be left adequately empty in order for it to easily digest the meal.

  • Also, avoid having any ice-cold drinks or other fizzy drinks with or after meal, if you wish to avoid stomach cramps or general discomfort. In fact, we need to avoid them altogether if we wish to keep our agni or the digestive fire strong. Instead, in summers or while you are facing high temperatures, it is advised that you may try some cool drinks made with organic rose water or gulabjala, or blend some milk with dates or fresh mangoes – these make healthy and absolutely delightful beverages.
