Sound and sufficient sleep is prized treasure as it helps in recharging our body and also effectively maintains the mind-body coordination. During sleep, our body tends to repair and heal itself. It has been observed that someone who suffers from a lack of quality sleep tends to suffer from various issues such as restlessness, irritation, dark circles, premature aging, and lack of concentration among others. Ayurveda, the traditional health and lifestyle science, describes this condition of insomnia or sleeplessness as ‘Anidra’ and relates it to an aggravated Vata dosha. Vata dosha or the Air body humor is responsible for our thinking process, body movement as well as activity. Although due to its light, fast, airy and erratic nature, someone with a balanced Vata dosha feels energized, light, inspired and creative too. Yet as Vata dosha is believed to be the most dominant of all the three doshas viz. Vata, Pitta and Kapha body humors or the biological forces in our body, its imbalance may lead to fatigue, excessive thoughtfulness, anxiousness, hyperactive mind and even insomnia. This is because it prevents us from detaching ourselves from the various events and activities of the day and interferes in peaceful sleep patterns.
