An important point to be noted about dengue fever is that the disease occurs by a mosquito bite mainly during the day time. However, all cases of dengue fever are not fatal – as it is generally perceived to be.
Signs and Symptoms
Dengue fever is also known as ‘break-bone fever’ and it acts rather severely on people with compromised immunity. The initial symptoms are high fever, joint pains and some other signs and symptoms. Bleeding of the gums, nosebleeds, rash (red, pinprick-sized spots on the skin), and discoloration of the skin such as bruising, severe or uncontrollable bleeding (severe symptom) might show up. Other than this, symptoms like vomiting, nausea, severe body pain, retro-orbital pain, sore throat, lack of appetite etc. are some of the characteristic signs and symptoms of dengue. In case the patient fails to recover from these symptoms, it lowers the blood platelet levels to abnormal levels and this is an alarming sign.
Is Dengue Dangerous?
Dengue infection has become a leading cause of illness and death worldwide. It is believed that about one-third of the world’s population is at risk. It is caused by one of four related viruses which are eventually transmitted by mosquitoes. Unfortunately, there are no vaccines that can prevent infection with this deadly virus and the only way out seems to avoid mosquito bite. In case of infection, quick diagnosis and stable treatment can help. You must be aware that only when your platelet count drops down at a fast rate, then there is a reason to worry. When the platelet count is below 20,000, this would lead to dengue haemorrhagic fever and in this case, the patient might go into coma or prove fatal.
