Infertility – Ayurveda Insight |
Infertility is a medical term used for a woman’s inability to conceive or have a baby, even after having had unprotected sexual intercourse for almost a period of one year. Even those who suffer from repeated miscarriages are often said to be infertile, with their uterus not being healthy enough to carry a baby for a full period of pregnancy.
Ayurveda Understanding of Infertility
Ayurveda, the age old science of health and wellness, lays great stress on the holistic healthcare. According to Ayurveda, the process of conception needs a healthy sperm, a healthy ovum and a healthy uterus. There is a reproductive tissue in the body, called Shukra dhatu, and the health of this tissue depends on the health of all the other tissues in the body. Therefore, in order to be able to conceive, it is important to ensure that not just the Shukra dhatu (Semen in males and Ovum in females) , but also all the other tissues in the body are getting their share of nutrients.
Ayurveda also advises that while overindulgence in sexual pleasures is bad for the reproductive health, one should also not overly limit one’s sexual urges – since this could affect one’s ability to conceive. However, the most common reason for a reduced female fertility happens to be ovulation disorder, and the major symptom of this remains irregular or absent menstrual periods.
