Simple Home Cures For Coughing & Sore Throat!
Throat infections are a bane of the changing season, especially in the Northern India. All the more, the rain tends to increase many folds the incidence of respiratory ailments like common cold, recurrent cough, pain and inflammation in the throat, fevers and even Asthma.
The irksome complaint of sore throat is one symptom, which is a regular feature of all the above stated ailments. This is generally associated with recurrent bouts of cough (usually allergic type), running nose and congestion. In this condition, intake of cough suppressants only provides relief temporarily and antibiotics are not advised until there is presence of infection and fever.
Coughing – The Dosha Influence
According to Ayurveda, throat malady is termed as ‘Kasa Roga’. It may be either:
- Vata type: caused due to distortion in the air body humor.
- Pitta type: caused due to distortion in the fire humor.
- Kapha type: due to an imbalance in the phlegm humor of the body.
- Results as a consequence of an infection or injury.
- Caused by the ailment of tuberculosis.
Advised Therapy For Coughing & Sore Throat
- Saline water gargles is the first advice that should be commenced at the slightest perception of throat irritation.
- Gargles with alum mixed in water acts as an antiseptic for the throat.
- In case of dry cough, it is essential to provide lubrication to the throat. For this, you can take a glass of milk with a teaspoon of ghee or 5 to 10 drops of ‘Badam-rogan’ added to it.
- It is quite important to correct constipation, if any. A mild laxative like Isabgol or Trifla churan (3 gms approx.) can be taken at bedtime.
- Freshly ground leaves of Holy Basil along with a few drops of ginger juice is highly beneficial, as this would also increase the resistance power to fight respiratory ailments.
- A powder prepared by pounding roots of the herb Liquorice (approx. one fourth of a teaspoon) can be taken two to three times mixed into half a teaspoon of honey.
- A decoction prepared with boiling black pepper, thyme, liquorice root, cardamom seeds, basil and ginger proves helpful. It can be sweetened with honey or mishri for better results.
- Steam inhalation is supportive to the recommended therapy as this results into a better expectoration.
- A local massage on the chest and the throat region with mustard oil or any medicated oil or balm could prove helpful.
- Vitamin C in any form enhances recovery. The fruit of Aamla is a rich source of the same. Fresh juice or dried Aamla powder (half a teaspoon) can be taken 2 or 3 times a day.
- In the Ayurvedic therapy, the dietary regimen plays an important role in getting rid as well as preventing the reoccurrence of the disease. The diet should consist more of light, warm and easily digestible foodstuffs like vegetable soups. Cold drinks, spicy and fried foods, curd and sour eatables need to be avoided.
- A number of Ayurvedic medicines like Sitoplaadi churan, Lavangaadi vatti, Draksh avleha and Chyavanprash avleha prove quite useful.
- Breathing exercises like ‘Pranayaam’ are extremely helpful as these aid the body to not only combat the disease, but also in the long run enhance its immunity levels.
