Uterine fibroids are noncancerous growths of the uterus that often appear during the child-bearing years. Heavy menstrual bleeding, prolonged menstrual periods, pelvic pressure or pain, frequent urination, difficulty in emptying the bladder, constipation, backache or groin pain are some of the common symptoms of uterine fibroids in women. According to Ayurveda, fibroids can be correlated to ‘Mamsa Arbuda’ which means abnormal growth in muscles and the connective tissues of the uterus. This abnormal growth generates excessive bleeding and is regarded as a disorder in the female reproductive system. The uterine fibroids can be caused due to kaphaja disorder or vata and pitta abnormalities. While fibroids may be majorly a kapha dosha accumulation disorder, these generally include vata & pitta (air and fire body humors) displacements and imbalances too, as sometimes the fibroids may be precancerous. This disease of female reproductive system is mentioned in ‘Yoni Vyapada’ in the ancient Ayurveda text. Ayurveda aims to balance the tri-dosha (watch video) with remedial measures in Diet (Ahara), Lifestyle (Dinacharya), Herbal medicines (Kaya-Chikitsa) and physical activities (Yoga-Asanas).
