Where Is God?
Whenever we sit and concentrate or think about the Supreme divinity, some particular images tend to surface in front of our eyes, and this happens with most of us. Be it God’s idol, sacred metaphors or symbols which are associated with spirituality and mysticism, but how can we be so sure about our thoughts when no one has even seen God?
God Is Omnipresent
God |
There is a Bengali folk tale that goes like this… Once a sage disclosed in his sermon that God was omnipresent, and that God was eventually present in every living creature. A simpleton from the village came across an elephant on the street. The mahout riding the elephant cautioned him to keep away but the man mindlessly kept going towards the elephant, only to be hit and injured. Later he went to the Sage and narrated the entire incident while questioning the sage about his proclamation of God being omnipresent. His query was that if God was present in the elephant, then why did it hurt him? To this the sage answered that God was all pervading as he was present in the Mahout who tried to caution the simpleton.
Perceiving God In The Involuntary
God |
I believe that anything that seems to happen all by itself and instinctively may be taken as God’s will and message. Our everyday life presents an array of events which many times takes us largely by surprise. These instances are spontaneous and beyond the control of either our will or perception. Or let us consider the involuntary processes going on within our system — the beating of our heart, the process of digesting food, blinking our eyes and so on. Where does our function come in these actions?
We are not even conscious about all these, but they are happening. Just as the sun’s rays emerge at dawn and darkness sets in when the sun disappears; like the transition of the seasons; like tears emerging from one’s eyes when there is an emotional turbulence… The examples that come to mind are infinite. If we are unable to experience and acknowledge the presence of the Almighty in all these, then can we take the credit?
Why Are We So Confused?
When we put in effort to perceive His existence or omnipresence, we could be facing resistance by our own logic. We, as humans, forget His existence as we are immersed in the struggles that everyday life brings. Our days on the earth are only limited, and thus whatever we are able to foresee, we believe it as the ultimate. If we are to believe that God is omnipresent, then we also must believe that He knows us along with our good deeds and bad.

Try Proclaiming God’s Non-Existence!
While ruminating on this subject, my mind came up with a straightforward solution, which came to me in the form of my son’s innocent response. When the kids came from school, I simply inquired if they liked the tiffin I gave them. When I heard the identical reply that the food was enjoyable, I asked, “I hope you are telling me the truth, as you kids hardly complain about your tiffin ever.” My son reverted, “Mom, if you want us not to commend the food every day, then you will have to give us a meal that is not good, only then will we know the difference.” So true! If you want to debate about God’s existence, then try proclaiming his non-existence! I cannot.
Surrendering to His Presence
God |
The more we acknowledge God’s presence in our lives, the more we will see and experience His blessing and support in numerous big and small gestures. Once we surrender to the trust that there is His hand in our existence, we will be vulnerable to His charisma and eternal existence. He does not conceal anything from us, it is only that we are unable to see and realize If we want to perceive His omnipresence, we need to be more perceptive of His indications and command.
“Give thanks to the Lord, call on his name; make known among the nations what he has done. Sing to him, sing praise to him; tell of all his wonderful acts. Glory in his holy name; let the hearts of those who seek the Lord rejoice. Look to the Lord and his strength; seek his face always. Remember the wonders he has done.” (Psalm 105:1-5)
The Story Of God
God |
There is a story by author Leo Tolstoy that relates to the subject. A cobbler was in search of God and once in his dream he heard God telling him that he would present himself before the poor cobbler the next day. This made the cobbler so excited and desperate to finally see God that he planned to close his shop and keep himself accessible for God to appear in front of his feeble eyes. It so happened that on the same day, he got customers — an old man, then a pregnant woman and finally a small boy.
The cobbler was so taken with the idea of seeing God before him that he simply ignored his customers and decided not to attend to them. Finally, as night fell and there was no appearance of God, he went to sleep and once again saw God in his dream. The cobbler asked why God had not kept his promise. But this is what God politely answered: “I came to you thrice today in the form of an old man, a pregnant woman and a small kid. But every single time you refused to pay attention to me.”
Isn’t the cobbler’s perplexity similar to the state we are in today? Maybe our states call for more awareness and self-realization, which could help us notice, as well as appreciate His divine presence in our lives every single day!
